“Every single breath we draw in, we inhale what our natural environment provides and in releasing that breath our environment breathes us back,” writes Kristina Søbstad. “Symbiosis refers to the interaction between two different organisms living in a close physical association typically to the advantage of both. This body of work highlights our symbiotic relationship with our delicate but also resilient natural environment. We are components of these spaces, not merely visitors. Our natural environment imprints on our physical and emotional selves, just the same as we imprint on it, a visceral and beautiful exchange.”

“Nebulas, friendship, fantasy, working together, stars, animal instincts and energy, were all words that Kristina Søbstad and I were inspired by for our Symbiosis duo exhibition,” writes Jared Betts. “Kristina and I both have a deep appreciation for abstract art, forests, stars, the ocean and mixed media mark making. Lately, I have been realizing more than ever that we are made of the same things stars are made of… the same atoms in our bodies are the same atoms that are created in the dying stage of an exploding star called a supernova. Too often, we can be so busy during the day that we can forget just how beautiful and magical we are as humans.”

“Art can be about a feeling rather than representation, and that is what the basis of Symbiosis is all about for me. I love the idea of working from my emotions and using mixed media to express myself through color, glitter, spray paint, splatters and prism light energy. Symbiosis is about bringing together my neo abstract expressionist works with Kristina’s synesthetic abstract dream landscapes with mountains and rushing energy flowing through valleys and bodies of water like electrical storms of fantastical ethereal bliss.”

Apple Art recently celebrated their 2 year anniversary of curating Artwork for Black Rabbit.

The funnest par about working with Black Rabbit is that they are as creative as a sculptor carving its creation.  We adore the challenge of pairing artworks to their ever changing menus.
They are located right bellow the Gallery at 333 St Georges Moncton, NB.
We've curated this collection of paintings by Jared Betts for Black Rabbit with one simple purpose.

JARED BETTS MOMENTUM

Digital Exhibition through Gallery on Queen

April 27, 2020

Gallery On Queen is pleased to announce "Momentum," a solo digital exhibition featuring Jared Betts. We are currently living in uncertain times. Our doors may be closed during this pandemic but art will persevere and continue to unite us. "Momentum" is an experimental new show being released through Facebook to keep the love of art alive in our community and beyond.

Beginning April 27, 2020, we will release 14 new pieces by Jared Betts online alongside a video from the artist discussing his work and vision for the show. All of the pieces will be available to purchase online through our new digital store.

"Momentum" marks a new chapter for the Gallery as we experiment with digitizing our experiences going forward. These are trying times but we hope to use these new online formats to continue bringing our community together and share new works with everyone.

“My paintings inhabit the space where consciousness descends into dream; where pattern and colour expand to become an immersive sensory experience. In this cerebral space, the synthetic fuses with the organic, and images dissolve into an amorphous arrangement of marks. I seek to examine this dream-like suppression of recognizable imagery. By combining the graphic edge of mark making with the sublime nature of the colourfield, I aim to create a surface that is both gently dissonant and hyperactive. Multiple layers of tension - between conscious and subconscious, pattern and color, flat surface and illusory depth – propel my desire to use visual cues as a means of stimulating metaphysical sensation.”

Jared Betts's paintings are included in numerous corporate and private collections in Paris, Toronto, Montreal, LA, China, Australia and Iceland. Jared earned a BFA from NSCAD University and has exhibited in over 150 exhibitions in Tokyo, Paris, New York, London, Iceland, Germany, Costa Rica and all across Canada. He is the recipient of nine artsnb grants, a Nova Scotia Tourism, Culture and Heritage grant, an Enterprise Greater Moncton business grant and a New Brunswick Tourism, Culture and Heritage grant.

Jared has taken part in several artist residencies, from the land of fire and ice in Iceland, a castle in Ireland to spending half a year in the jungles of Costa Rica resulting in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Costa Rica. Most recently, he gave an artist talk at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, completed a 100 foot mural in Halifax sponsored by Studio 21 Fine Art Gallery and exhibited at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.

Honolulu Escapism

Jared Betts’ most recent series Honolulu Escapism is marked by a familiar sentiment. In a time when there is a prevalent tendency to seek distraction from reality by engaging with fantasy and fiction, the sources from which Betts draws inspiration are recognizable as fixtures of contemporary pop culture. Betts’ paintings simultaneously capture the colourful whimsy of television characters from Sailor Moon to Disney and explore the aesthetics of contemporary digital media such as video games and cyberpunk. Betts’ paintings are truly a product of being, thinking, and playing in the 21st century. Betts creates a convergence of nebulas, wormholes, and neon lights to construct extraordinary celestial dreamworlds that distill the essence of contemporary fantasy.

The vibrant colours and textures of Betts’ abstractions pull the viewer into his dreamscapes that are animated with winding tunnels and punctuated with playful creatures and twinkling stars. The fluorescent striations and quick gestural impressions that immediately capture the viewer’s attention suggest both tangible and conceptual motion. The audience is invited to trace each step of Betts’ creative process while navigating the many layers of his compositions. If one looks long enough and allows oneself to become transfixed, these two-dimensional pieces can start to feel as though they extend infinitely beyond the picture plane. Each swath of colour has been thoughtfully applied; however, by affording these colours their own agency to drip downwards, Betts enters the realm of unpredictability, allowing the medium to cascade across the canvas. In losing himself entirely to the overwhelming ritualistic process Betts surrenders himself to the “psychological alchemy” of painting in which the artist acts as a prism emitting colourful rays of light.

There is a world of difference between looking and seeing. To look is to observe; to act as a passive witness. To see, however, is to actively engage with a visual experience. Everyone who encounters Honolulu Escapism is looking at the same images but each viewer has the opportunity to create their own psychological and emotional connections with what is before them. Although individual insights may be distinct, the utopic dreamscapes of Honolulu Escapism offer a shared experience of enchantment and fantasy, offering a place of collective respite from reality through ethereal renderings of familiar imagery.

Jared Betts – AGNS, Yarmouth, Creative Minds Artist Talk

October 27th, 2019 1-3pm

Jared Betts’s expressionist, gestural paintings provide an immersive sensory experience. Jared is from Moncton, New Brunswick and holds a BFA from NSCAD University. He has exhibited in over 100 group and solo exhibitions in Paris, Tokyo, London, New York City, Germany, Costa Rica and Iceland, as well as Canada.

Jared will be showing slides + talking about his art education at NSCAD + about his artist residency experiences. In 2011, he did two Costa Rican residencies in the rainforest surrounded by 8 foot snakes, a baby praying mantis pet that lived on a flower next to his door, earthquakes, sloths, butterflies going in and out of his studio, 6 foot iguanas on the roof and daily geckos sometimes even hatching on his bedside table, which resulted in a two month exhibition at the National Gallery of Costa Rica in a pink castle. Artist residencies have been a huge part of his creation along with the adventures that inspire the works. Jared will also talk about his experience in Tokyo a few years ago where he got to see his dream city with all of the sushi and neon lights one could ever handle! Materiality and Perception in Contemporary Atlantic Art: The 2019 Marion McCain Exhibition

Deanna Musgrave (New Brunswick), A Conversation With Emma Kunz (detail), 2019. Acrylic on canvas, 47" tondo.

October 19 - January 26, 2020    |    Exhibition

It has now been over thirty years that the Beaverbrook Art Gallery has presented the Marion McCain Exhibition of Atlantic Art. The first exhibition was presented in 1987 as a juried show with artwork selected from among a wide array of submissions by artists from around New Brunswick.
This installment of the Marion McCain Exhibition of Atlantic Art, curated by Tom Smart, reflects how art and decorative arts are expressive agents for the individuals creating them. They are also ways for viewers to explore how objects themselves and the materials from which they are made can change the way we see ourselves, our communities and the world at large.

Curated by Tom Smart and organized by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. Support for this exhibition has been generously provided by the H. Harrison McCain family.

SAINT JOHN ARTS CENTRE

PICTUS

Opening: September 6, 2019, 5:30 - 7:30PM

Exhibition: September 6 - October 25, 2019

Curated by Paul Edouard Bourque

The Saint John Arts Centre presents PICTUS: Recent works by Jared Betts.

Pictus consists of a series of large-scale acrylic paintings on canvas, by Moncton based artist Jared Betts. Created during the winter months of 2018-19, these works are part of a major show currently touring the Maritimes. The exhibition is curated by Paul Édouard Bourque.

Jared Betts is currently engaged in exploring cutting edge expression modes in the field of contemporary painting. His use of gesture and expressionist forms has since the onset set the tone for his highly charged pictorial works. Betts aims at rethinking the very parameters of contemporary painting, and his work as such touches on many pertinent and pressing concerns around the practice of chromatic mark-making, and how these relate to artistic ideals in the 21st century.

Betts confronts the picture plane with bravado and panache. Application and treatment of pigmented matter relies on a zen-inspired attitude mastered by the artist who “gazes trance-like at the surface, until the piece happens…”. Painting such as this requires a definite sang-froid and the mastery of one’s state of mind. The realization of a self-contained, autonomous body of work results from Betts’ full-time commitment to the exploratory adventure around mark-making and structural use of colour as a construction strategy for the picture.

Betts has traveled extensively and has benefited from many artist residencies throughout the world. His rapid absorption of other cultural mores has resulted in a global stance, but also a very intimate and personal one, in regards to what it signifies for an artist to articulate and express visual ideas and ideals onto a blank canvas, while maintaining a deep commitment towards the graphic expression of abstraction and form. His vision resonates within contemporary concepts relating to site, space and time. His strong ties to itinerancy and travel underline the inescapable passage of time; sequence allied to process becomes manifest in these large canvases, whose aim seeks to engulf the viewer’s imagination with vibrancy, action and life.

PICTUS: Recent works by Jared Betts

Curated by: Paul Édouard Bourque

June 8 - July 6, 2019
Join us for the opening on Saturday, June 8 from 2:00PM - 4:00PM. The artist will be in attendance.

The Andrew and Laura McCain Art Gallery presents Pictus, a new series of paintings by Jared Betts.

Pictus consists of a series of large-scale ethereal acrylics on canvas, created during the winter months of 2018-19. These works are part of a major touring show curated by Paul Édouard Bourque.

Jared Betts is an artist exploring new expressive forms in the domain of contemporary painting. His deep appreciation of gestural and expressionist forms has since the onset set the tone for his highly charged creative works. Betts aims at rethinking the very parameters of contemporary painting, and his work as such touches on pertinent and pressing concerns around the practice of chromatic mark-making, and how these relate to artistic ideals in the 21st century.

Betts’ works deal with bravado and panache. His outpouring of gestural strategies vigorously confront the picture plane. Application and treatment of pigmented matter relies on a zen-inspired attitude mastered by the artist who “gazes trance-like at the surface, until the piece happens…”. Painting such as this requires a definite sang-froid, but also the mastery of one’s state of mind and emotional stance and how these relate to the realization of a self-contained, complete body of work conforming to the artistic ambitions of its creator.

Betts has travelled extensively and has benefited from many artist residencies throughout the world. His vision resonates vividly with contemporary attitudes on site, space and time, but also suggests a strong regard for hand-produced artifacts which encapsulate the gesture and verve of a creative mind at work. His strong ties to itinerancy and travel underline the inescapable passage of time, and sequence allied to process become manifest in these large ethereal canvases, whose aim seeks to engulf the viewer’s imagination with vibrancy, action and life.

When explaining his new series, Jared Betts describes it as an “Ethereal Neon Dream” where he’s allowed himself to be more gestural, loose and free. With the help of a B-level creation grant from artsnb, Jared is confident that this is his strongest work yet and perhaps even a continuation of his larger work created for a group exhibition at the Beaverbrook Gallery in 2014.

WISH 150 - ABERDEEN CULTURAL CENTER

SEPTEMBER 1 - SEPTEMBER 30, 2017

CURATED BY: ERIKA AUDFROID

MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA

We have very powerful dreams. Our collective imagination is a source of hope, direction and inspiration to unlock a prosperous future. The Wish 150 mosaic is a national initiative created to bring together our communities and inspire for a better future through art and colour. The Wish 150 New Brunswick Exhibit will bring together works from 11 different artists from across the province, to form a diverse mosaic in the shape of the Tidal Bore, our very own natural and beautiful phenomenon. It shows how our diversity is our strengths with different artists, aspirations, culture, and mediums combined at the mosaic. It shows how our art can make a difference. The artists have the opportunity to express creatively their identity, the aesthetics of their community, their points of view and wishes for Canada in the next 150 years.

Tokyo Series
Jared Betts

Friday July 22, 2016
7 PM

Born in Moncton, New Brunswick in 1983, Jared Betts earned a BFA from NSCAD University. He has exhibited in over 100 group and solo exhibitions in Canada, Paris, Tokyo, London, New York City, Germany, Costa Rica and Iceland.

This series was recently exhibited at the Tokyo International Art Fair and was created in Montreal this past winter. Jared is inspired by 80s fashion, his past life as a mermaid and alien abduction. These paintings inhabit the space where consciousness descends into dream; where color theory, cyborgs, and repeating patterns expand to become an immersive sensory experience. Each painting is a dissonant whisper that cocoons the soul of cyberpunk anime characters and animal spirits.

Exhibition runs until September 2, 2016

CAPITOL THEATRE GALLERY

OPENING:  WEDNESDAY, MARCH 2, 2016 @ 5:00PM - 7:00PM

FEBRUARY 26 - APRIL 29, 2016

MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA

The public is invited to the opening of the art exhibit "From the Rainforest to the Sea" by artist Jared Betts in the Capitol Theatre lobby on Wednesday, March 2nd, at 5 p.m.

This exhibition at the Capitol Theatre Art Gallery will be of paintings created at an artist residency in the rainforest, which resulted in a two-month exhibition at the National Gallery of Costa Rica in San Jose. There will also be new works that were created in a castle in Ballyvaughan, Ireland last fall.

Jared Betts currently works out of Moncton, New Brunswick. His work is included in numerous corporate and private collections in Canada, Paris, California, China, Australia and Iceland. He has exhibited in over 100 group and solo exhibitions including: Beaverbrook Art Gallery, the New Brunswick Museum, Montreal, Paris, London, New York City, Germany, Costa Rica and Iceland. Jared is the recipient of a Nova Scotia Tourism, Culture and Heritage grant and six artsnb grants.

“My paintings inhabit the space where consciousness descends into dream; where pattern and colour expand to become an immersive sensory experience. In this cerebral space, the synthetic fuses with the organic, and images dissolve into an amorphous arrangement of marks. I seek to examine this dream-like suppression of recognizable imagery and capture the visceral sensation that bubbles up from underneath.” By combining the graphic edge of mark making with the sublime nature of the colorfield, the artist aims to create a surface that is both gently dissonant and hyperactive. Multiple layers of tension - between conscious and subconscious, pattern and color, flat surface and illusory depth – propel his desire to use visual cues as a means of stimulating metaphysical sensation.

BEAVERBROOK ART GALLERY

OFF THE GRID: ABSTRACT PAINTING IN NEW BRUNSWICK

CBC NEWS

Abstract art is not only difficult to interpret..In New Brunswick, it's rarely been considered part of the art scene, but the Beaverbrook Gallery in Fredericton is trying to change that perception. For the first time, it's collected pieces from abstract artists that call New Brunswick home and put them under one roof. As Caroline Gdyczynski found out they're hoping it will help rewrite our part of the history of abstract art in Canada.

BEAVERBROOK ART GALLERY

OFF THE GRID: ABSTRACT PAINTING IN NEW BRUNSWICK

26 June to 14 September, 2014

Opening: Thursday, June 26 at 5pm

In most authoritative narratives of the visual arts in Canada, developments in the artistic life of New Brunswick are most often pushed to the historical margins or conspicuously absent, in favour of reinforcing the same identifiable artist names, movements and styles. If mentioned at all, New Brunswick is most typically associated with a strong tradition of figurative painting or Maritime Realism, while abstract painting is confined to only three regions of the country: Quebec, Ontario, and the West. In reality, the story of the visual arts in Canada is infinitely richer and more complex than such cursory and/or exclusionary, self-perpetuating discourses tell us. For example, there is a unique, albeit fractured, history of abstract painting in New Brunswick that has, until now, never been told, one that can only deepen our understanding and appreciation of Canadian visual arts culture.

Off the Grid: Abstract Painting in New Brunswick constitutes a ground-breaking statement on the presence, nature and meaning of non-representational or abstract painting in New Brunswick. It features a cross-section of work by senior, mid-career, and emerging artists: Jared Betts, David Bizzo, Sarah Cale, Luc Charette, Lionel Cormier, Mark DeLong, Angel Gomez, Georges Goguen, Toby Graser, Jay Isaac, Jocelyn Jean, Christian Michaud, Deanna Musgrave, Dana O’Regan, Sarah Petite, Lori Slauenwhite, and David Umholtz. Also highlighted is a selection of non-figurative art by some of the province’s pioneering abstract painters, most notably Jack Humphrey, Lawren P. Harris, Fritz Brandtner, Claude Roussel, Joseph Kashetsky, and Roméo Savoie, and the surprising recovery of R. D. Turnbull, one of Canada’s earliest abstractionists, who made a significant contribution to the development of Abstract Expressionism in North America, but is virtually unknown in the annals of Canadian art history.

An accompanying publication features essays by Virgil Hammock, Ian Lumsden, Maryse Grondin and Jacques Martin, Ingrid Mueller, and Terry Graff.

Curator: Terry Graff
